Backpacks; The Middletown Lions Club; and the Interfaith Food Pantry are all a part of the success story. The No Kid Hungry Program is now in it’s third year of helping children in Middletown.   Pictured are Middletown Lions Club President Deborah Shembeda and Lions member Robert Foglia getting ready to distribute the backpacks.

Each week backpacks are filled with kid accessible meals and snacks including things such as peanut butter, jelly, crackers, pudding cups, fruit cups, nutrition bars, self-stable milk, juice boxes, cereal and more.  Currently 48 backpacks are distributed weekly through the four Middletown elementary schools.

Lions Club members and other volunteers fill the backpacks.  Cost is $8 to $10 per weekly backpack.  Last year 996 backpacks were distributed.

Girl Scouts help with backpacks

Nineteen Girl Scouts from Middletown Troops 113, 620, and 781 and 6 of their leaders recently helped fill the backpacks.  Each young lady donated an appropriate food item.

The backpacks are taken home on Friday afternoons enabling children to eat throughout the weekend, a time when otherwise they are likely to go hungry.

The No Kid Hungry campaign is a national program which has a simple goal– ending childhood hunger in America.
